Black Spot has long been the bane of rose growers, especially for those who seek to grow them organically. Black Spot is a fungal disease which afflicts the leaves of roses, and it prospers especially in wet and humid conditions. There are many synthetic fungicides that work, but many gardeners do not want to handle these type of chemicals.

There are many organic controls which have a variety of results. Bordeaux mix ( Copper Sulfate) is often recommended, but it is toxic to other animals and often shunned by hardcore Organic gardeners. Other sulfur compounds have worked fairly well, including sulfur powder. Essential Oils such as White Thyme Oil and Cedarwood Oil have antifungal properties, but are somewhat unknown in control of black spot.

Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) has been a somewhat popular option, but it has to be used judiciously because the Sodium can burn leaves, especially in hot conditions. I should know: I defoliated part of my peach tree one July using a Baking Soda solution. A promising option is the Potassium version, Potassium Bicarbonate. Unlike household baking soda, the Potassium does not burn the leaf and it shares the same pH and safety of what is in your kitchen. How does it work? One theory is that the pH on the leaf is slightly altered so as the fungal spores will not attach. Bicarbonate works best as a preventative measure, applied before a widespread fungal outbreak occurs.

For outbreaks of Black Spot, an Organic Solution is household Hydrogen Peroxide.  Suggested levels are cutting household peroxide approximately 5:1 (5 parts water/ 1 part Peroxide) with water and spraying it directly on the infected leaves. Amount of dilution may vary depending on your amount of Black Spot and your particular plant. This diluted solution is not stable for long so do not store.    Follow this treatment with application of Organic Rose Spray made from Organic Rose Concentrate.

  SOLUTIONS:

Japanese Beetles-Use Neem to deter feeding or Insecticidal Soaps as a contact killer.  Pheronome traps are also effective if placed away from the affected plants.

Home Ant Control- Organic Bait.  Mix twenty parts granular sugar with one part household Borax.  Place out near Ant's trail ant let them eat away.  Borax will kill them.  ( You may need to place bait on foil or in inverted butter dishes with holes.)  *Sucessfully tested by site visitor.

Weeds- For areas which you do not want anything to grow, pour table salt or a salt solution on that area. (Example- cracks between walkway.)  Make sure this will not wash into an area which you do want growth.
