ORGANIC SOLUTIONS
Essential Oils are concentrated, volatile plant oils which have unique properties. Many of them have insect repellant properties and distinctive smells. We currently offer these essential oils:

CITRONELLA- Oil from the South American Lemon Grass. Citronella repels mosquitoes by interfering with their mating. It can also be used as a home air freshener with it's clean lemony smell.

Homemade Mosquito Repellant- Add 1-2% of Citronella Oil to Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol). Use as a spray. Also can add 2 % Soybean Oil which is a possible mosquito repellant and will help keep oils on the skin. (As with products of this type, use with caution and discontinue use if irritation occurs.)
Horse Owners- A customer in Connecticut added citronella oil to Vaseline and put on her horse. This was recommended by her veternarian and it helped keep ticks away. See our Organics for Horses page for Citronella Fly Away.
CITRUS OIL-(d-limonene)- Citrus Oil is steam distilled from the peels of citrus fruits and has the distinctive citrus smell. Citrus Oil is toxic to fleas and the odor repels them. It can also be used as an home air freshener. It can be used in Homemade Carpet Freshener (see Tips.) For a water dispersible citrus oil, see Garden/Home.

CEDARWOOD OIL-From Juniperus sp. A natural moth repellant. Revive your Cedar chest by rubbing oil into the cedar wood. This gives your cedar chest its characteristic smell back and will kill damaging clothes moth larvae. Cedar loses its effectiveness over time and annual treatment will revive the cedar. Cedarwood oil can also be used to recharge cedar sachets. A long known natural alternative to synthetic napthalene mothballs. Can be added at 10-20% to Linseed Oil as a drying oil. Also can be added to Soybean or Sunflower at the same level.

TEA TREE OIL-Australian- Anstiseptic/Healing properties-This works great on my dog's "hot spots". Just apply straight with a cotton ball or guaze.

PEPPERMINT OIL- Fresh peppermint smell, from Chinese peppermint. Contains 35% menthol. Use to freshen up the house. I put it in our mop water before mopping. It will also help open up your sinuses. Peppermint Oil can be used as an Organic Repellent for mice. Spread with spray bottle or rag in area you want to keep them away.
